"You're from the Mountain? How curious! I suppose that's why you're so different..."
"Her hapy blood bathed her to the forehead. He was praising her--and praising her because she came from the Mountain!"
I thought that it was strange that being called different was praise to Charity. When I first read what Lucius said to Charity, I was expecting her to take it as an insult. However, it seemed as if it was the greatest compliment anyone had ever given her. To me, it seems like people do what they can to fit in and not be different for the most part. Being different is usually meant to call people strange or not quite right. I think that she was almost nervous to tell Lucius that she was of the mountains, just from the negative impression of it she had recieved from the people of the town all of her life. I think that we will find out a lot more about the mountain life now that she has someone else interested in it and to help her investigate it.
"She understood that, profoundly as she had despised Mr. Royall ever since, he despised himself still more profoundly."
I thought that this passage was interesting to me. It seems to show just how ashamed Mr. Royall was of what he did that night. It seems also that Charity doesn't even have to be upset with him, because he is beating himself up about it enough on his own. The relationship between Charity and Mr. Royall is very strange to me. I imagine it was different before Mrs. Royall died. I think things would be more clear if we knew how Mr. and Mrs. Royall came about to be guardians of Charity. It also seems that Charity now has the upper hand with the decisions made and what goes on at the Royall house. Maybe Mr. Royall is kind of giving in to her because he is afraid she will go tell other people in the town of what happened or else, coming from the quote, he is so angry at himself for what happened he is giving in to make up to her what he did.

In response to your second quote: I agree that Charity and Mr. Royall's relationship is really weird to me too. I agree also that it probably was much different when Mrs. Royall was still alive and I wonder how Mr. Royall and Charity's relationship was like during that time. I think that Mr. Royall was making up for what he did by when he talks to everyone at the Old Home week celebration. The way their eyes met and how he looked at her when he was talking rally made it show that it ddi seem as if he was ashamed of himself and wanted to make things between him and Charity better. Even after this though, she still likes when he is absent at the house, and doesn't really seem to give him the time of day. However, toward the end, he is very caring toward her when he comes to pick her up and take her to eat, but I wonder if that was only because he felt it was a good opportunity to have them get married. I am still confused about their whole marriage and think it is strange. I don't think Charity is happy with it, and I think she just gave up hope and gave into Mr. Royall. I think toward the end though, she was able to see a softer side of him, when she sees him still awake in the chair at the hotel room, how he gives her money to be better than the other girls, and a new sense of security and peace came to her. Their marriage should be an interesting one-I wonder if Harney would ever come back or if he ended up marrying the other girl, and if Charity did end up at peace with her marriage to Mr. Royall, or if she did go along with the fate of the girl who was married "to make things right."
I have been debating whether I hate Harney, or I like Harney. When I read people's blog about his nice quotes that he says to her I think that, WOW what an amazing man! This quote was different to me because I think that it was unintentional. He doensn't really know anything about the mountain. The fact that he gives her praise from being from the mountain, had to do a lot to her self-esteem. I mena your whole life you are told that the mountain is this horrible disquisting place. If you live there, basically you are trash, etc. Then this handsome stranger who has been many places, and has experienced all sorts of pleasures, comes and tells you that you are from the mountain, how neat. I think for the first time Charity felt a proud sense of being from the mountain.
